Salt Lake City, Utah | Full-Time | CHARTER
At First Step House, "We help people build lives of meaning, purpose, and recovery." Everything we do is centered around that mission, and we are looking for people who want their work to have a meaningful impact on the lives of the people we serve.
We are hiring a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) to join our Medical Clinic team in Salt Lake City!
The PMHNP provides concurrent mental health and substance use disorder care to clients of First Step House who are working with a primary treatment team. This position primarily serves individuals receiving treatment for a substance use disorder who also experience co-occurring mental health conditions.
Many of the people we serve come to First Step House from incarceration, homelessness, shelters, or detox programs and may have had little or no consistent access to medical care. The PMHNP also provides psychiatric care to individuals living in First Step House permanent supportive housing who are experiencing serious mental illness.
In this role, you will independently assess, diagnose, prescribe, and monitor psychiatric medications, while collaborating closely with therapists and other members of the treatment team to provide safe, coordinated, and high-quality care.
The PMHNP will also complete training and provide medication-assisted treatment for substance use disorders. Success in this position requires an understanding of the complex needs of individuals experiencing mental health conditions, substance use disorders, homelessness, and other barriers to consistent healthcare.
We're looking for a PMHNP who is clinically confident, organized, collaborative, and able to establish strong professional boundaries while maintaining a compassionate, client-centered approach.
Tired of working 40+ hours a week? Join First Step House and enjoy a standardized 36-hour work week!
At First Step House, you'll do more than manage medications. You'll have the opportunity to provide whole-person psychiatric care to individuals who may have historically faced significant barriers to healthcare.
You'll work alongside therapists, case managers, housing teams, and other professionals to help clients address both their mental health and substance use needs while building stability and long-term recovery.
If you're a compassionate and clinically skilled PMHNP who wants to make a meaningful difference in the lives of people experiencing complex behavioral health needs, we'd love to meet you!

There are days that the job is hard, but I think the reward outweighs how hard the job is. The reward of seeing people smile, seeing people come to the front desk and say, ‘thank you guys for everything you do –you’ve really helped me for the day.’
First Step is a great place to come if you truly want to feel like you’re making a difference. It’s really awesome coming to work everyday knowing that I’m valued and that I’m cared for and that not just my work life is important but overall.
Not only does First Step invest so much in their clients and wraparound services to set them up for success, but they do the same with employees. They give us generous time off and really encourage good like work-life balance which is so needed in this field.
I work at First Step House because I feel valued and feel like I’m giving back to my community.
The things I like most about First Step House and my job are that I get to see clients come into the building with no hope at all, and I get to watch them go from no hope to having all the hope in the world, a place to live, a job, and having a fresh life.
If you want your work to mean something, you’re in the right place.
Join a team that shows up for each other and the people we serve.
