About Us

Since 1958

First Step House began as a small recovery home in 1958. Today, we are a nonprofit in Salt Lake County helping more than 1,700 people each year rebuild after addiction, homelessness, and incarceration.

We specialize in serving people with dually diagnosed substance use and mental health conditions — the very people who have slipped through the cracks everywhere else. At First Step House, they finally receive whole-person care: treatment, housing, medical services, employment support, and long-term recovery management.

We offer two main
Pathways Forward

01.

Treatment and recovery housing, where people move step by step — from residential care, into sober housing, and ultimately into independent living. We also offer a dedicated track for veterans.

02.

Permanent supportive housing, designed for people whose mental or behavioral health conditions mean they need long-term support. Right now, we operate 161 apartments across

For our community, this means safer streets, fewer arrests and ER visits, and fewer people returning to homelessness. For our clients, it means the chance to reconnect with family, find work, and build a life of purpose and recovery.
